Susana Arrachea, Global Programs Director, New Sun Road
Susana Arrechea is Global Programs Director at New Sun Road, a Californian start-up incubated at UC Berkeley. She develops digital community centers with solar electrification and connectivity for rural indigenous women in Guatemala, funded by the US Agency for International Development and the Microsoft Airband Initiative.
She pursued a Master of Science and a Ph.D. degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. There, she described more than 14 new organic molecules derived from porphyrins with applications in solar devices.
In 2017, she won the Galardón de Guatemaltecos Ilustres Award and the TWAS Young Scientists Award in Guatemala. In 2020, she won the OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award for Early-Career Women Scientists in the Developing World representing Latin America and co-founded the OWSD Guatemalan chapter.
Kamala Gurung, Gender and Natural Resources Management Specialist, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
Dr. Kamala Gurung has more than 20 years of experience in gender and social inclusion issues in natural resource management and agricultural fields. While working with grassroots communities, she was very passionate about gender and social inclusion issues in the field of natural resource management. She has a master’s degree in International Development and Social Change, majoring in gender and development focusing on livestock and natural resource management, at Clark University, USA, and a doctoral degree in the same field. Dr Gurung is also the gender focal person for Stimulating Action for Clean Air and SERVIR-HKH Initiatives.
Before joining ICIMOD, Dr Gurung has worked in various research and development organizations such as IRRI – CGIAR (Bangladesh), IUCN-Nepal, and The Mountain Institute (TMI)-Nepal. She also worked with NR International and Imperial College London as a Team Leader for the gender component of a livestock project in Nepal funded by the DFID-Livestock Production Programme (UK) and UN FAO (Rome).
