Today is International Day for Biological Diversity! It is a day to celebrate the incredible variety of life on earth from the smallest microorganisms to the largest whales, and all the diverse ecosystems that sustain them.
This year’s theme, Harmony with nature and sustainable development, reminds us that biodiversity isn’t just about beautiful landscapes; it’s the foundation of our planet’s health and our own well-being. It provides us with the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, and countless other essential services.
At Women4Biodiversity, we believe empowering women and integrating gender perspectives are crucial for achieving an equitable and sustainable future. We are honoured to share a special video message from two inspiring leaders,
🌱 Ms. Elisa Morgera, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Climate Change
🌱 Ms. Mrinalini Rai, Founder and Director of Women4Biodiversity
In this powerful message, Ms. Morgera and Ms. Rai highlight the vital role of all living organisms, visible and invisible, that sustain life on Earth. They urge us to embrace a whole-of-society, inclusive approach to protecting biodiversity and upholding human rights, leveraging frameworks like the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to uplift those most impacted.
🌸 Fun Fact: International Day for Biological Diversity was originally celebrated on 29 December, marking the day the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) came into force in 1993. However, in 2000, the United Nations General Assembly moved the date to 22 May, which was the day the CBD was adopted in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit. This change was made to give the day more visibility and relevance in global environmental conversations.
We were also a part of the webinar on Exploring the Interconnections Between Human Rights, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Development in Asia. This webinar was a collaboration between UN Human Rights – Asia and Women4Biodiversity to celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity 2025. It explored the interconnections, and the panellists discussed urgent challenges and solutions. Do not miss to read the event summary and powerful quotes from the speakers.
