The twenty-eighth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-28) will take place from 27 July to 1 August, and the seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-7) will take place from 4 to 12 August 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya.
SBSTTA provides scientific and technical advice to the Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and also serves the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Nagoya Protocol.
SBI supports the review and strengthening of the implementation of the Convention and its Protocols, helping Parties assess progress, address challenges, and improve the effectiveness of actions under the CBD.
Together, these subsidiary body meetings constitute an important milestone on the path to the 2026 UN Biodiversity Conference, including COP17, which will take place in Yerevan, Armenia, from 19 to 30 October 2026.

Delivering the KMGBF Through Rights-Based Implementation: Territories, Partnerships and Finance
This side event will examine how the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework can be implemented in a holistic and consistent manner, grounded in its Section C considerations, including human rights-based approaches, whole-of-society action, and the full and effective participation of Indigenous Peoples and Tribal Peoples, and other rights holders and communities.
The event is particularly relevant to SBI-7, which will consider key implementation issues including the global review of collective progress in KMGBF implementation. These discussions create an important opportunity to clarify how rights-based approaches can be reflected not only in policy commitments, but also in the practical arrangements, partnerships and financing models through which biodiversity action is delivered.
Participants may join in person or remotely. Interpretation will be available in English, French and Spanish. Participants who require interpretation are kindly requested to bring their own electronic devices and headsets.

From Commitment to Collective Action: The Role of Non-State Actors in Updating and Implementing NBSAPs
Hosted by the GEF biodiversity enabling activities projects (the GBF Early Action Support Project and the GEF-8 Umbrella Programme to Support NBSAP Update and 7th National Reports), together with the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership, this event will be held as a reception, and will provide a space for Parties and partners to exchange experiences and lessons learned on engaging non-state actors in NBSAP planning, updating, implementation, and associated processes. The session will showcase practical examples from countries and representatives of different non-state actor groups, including efforts to advance gender-responsive implementation in line with GBF Targets 22 and 23.
The event will be structured around thematic roundtable discussions focused on different stakeholder groups and engagement approaches, enabling participants to move between discussions throughout the reception. These exchanges are intended to foster peer learning, identify opportunities to strengthen collaboration, and support Parties in leveraging non-state actors more effectively in the implementation of the GBF.

Women4Biodiversity is officially a member of the Steering Committee for the CBD IUCN-ARO TSCC. The committee serves as the TSC Support Centre’s governance body, consisting of representatives from six Parties, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, gender (women) and youth sectors, and Women4Biodiversity has been invited to bring in the gender dimension to the work of the TSCC.

Setting the stage for inclusion: Initial Reflections on the CBD IUCN-Asia Regional Office Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centre
The IUCN Asia Regional Office (ARO) was formally designated as a Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centre (TSCC) under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Technical and Scientific Cooperation Mechanism, established pursuant to CBD COP 15 Decision 15/8 supporting implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The designation of regional and subregional support centres was finalized through the CBD SBI-4 process in 2024. Further operational guidance under CBD COP 16 Decision 16/3, advanced implementation arrangements for the mechanism. The IUCN-ARO TSCC was operationalized during the 2025–2026 biennium, with the first virtual Steering Committee meeting convened in April 2026.
As of April 2026, the six countries aligned with IUCN-ARO TSCC, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Japan, Maldives, Republic of Korea and Sri Lanka, are actively engaging with the IUCN-ARO TSCC through technical exchanges.

The seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI7) offers a unique opportunity to bring a diverse group of participants together who are attending the SBI7. Women4Biodiversity has been hosting these “Friends of Gender Equality” meet and greet events during these CBD intersessional meetings since 2022.
The recption will also commemorate 9 August, which is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples; marking the day within a networking reception highlights intersections between gender, indigenous knowledge, and biodiversity implementation.
A relaxed, inclusive cocktail reception will facilitate informal exchange, relationship-building, cross-learning, and visibility for Women4Biodiversity’s work on gender-responsive biodiversity policy and indigenous women’s leadership.
