In October 2025, Panama City will host a tandem of high-stakes CBD meetings: SBSTTA-27 (20–24 October) followed immediately by SB8J-1 (27–30 October) at the Atlapa Convention Center. During SBSTTA-27, delegates will dive deep into the science and technical guidance needed to drive forward the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF), tackling issues such as ecosystem restoration, biodiversity monitoring, risk assessment, alien invasive species, and the interface of biodiversity with climate and health.
Immediately thereafter, SB8J-1, the newly created body for matters concerning Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPs and LCs) will formally launch. At its first session, SB8J-1 will finalise its modus operandi, begin operationalising its 2025–2030 programme of work, and focus on integrating traditional knowledge, rights, and equitable participation into the implementation of key GBF targets, especially those involving land, water, and ecosystem stewardship in Indigenous and local community territories.
