Within its borders, a dedicated team of women researchers, known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/indigenous-karen-women-lead-in-documenting-biocultural-plant-species-in-the-salween-peace-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women Research Group<\/a>, is embarking on a crucial mission: documenting the biocultural plant species that sustain their Indigenous identities and communities. This photo story delves into their journey, capturing the challenges they face and the remarkable achievements they&rsquo;ve made in preserving this vital knowledge. Prepare to be inspired by their dedication as we explore the intricate world of plant life in the Salween Peace Park, documented through the lens of these remarkable women.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px;\">All information provided by Karen Environmental and Social Action Network (<a href=\"https:\/\/kesan.asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KESAN<\/a>)<br \/>All photos provided by the Women Research Group (<a href=\"https:\/\/kesan.asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KESAN<\/a>)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Banner-photo-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">The Women Research Group (WRG) consists of Indigenous Karen women who passionately document the Salween Peace Park (SPP) biodiversity, which is an Indigenous conserved territory spanning over 6,000 square km in Mutraw district, Kawthoolei, Myanmar. \u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9325\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Proposed-Outcomes-photo-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">As the primary caretakers of their communities and territories, Indigenous Karen women have an intimate understanding of the environment and the interconnectedness of all living beings.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/photo-story.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Documenting ethnobotanical knowledge is risky and sometimes dangerous.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9327\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/955_0-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Here one of the research team members is crossing a river on a bridge made up of bamboo.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/photostory1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Without their brave endeavors, we wouldn\u2019t know facts like the leaves and flowers of the honeysuckle are edible and have medicinal value.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/692_0-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">One of the important aspects of their work is working together and sharing knowledge with the local communities.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/805_0-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Before conducting research in the forest, the locals pray for their safety as a sign of respect for nature and the spirits.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1031_0-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">One way of documenting progress is by measuring plants. Here, the research team is measuring the \u00ab\u00a0Ter Aye Shay\u00a0\u00bb plant during field research. Some \u00ab\u00a0Ter Aye Shay\u00a0\u00bb plants are found in forests, while some are planted. They are edible, and their roots are cooked with meat.\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/1002_0-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Another way is to label the plants so that they are on file for record and future reference. Here, the plant is labeled in the Karen language. \u00ab\u00a0Paw Kwaw Gaw\u201d is one of the flowers that bloom during the rainy season.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/762_0-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">\u201cBulbophyllum bittnerianum\u201d is a flower found in the Karen area. It is considered the \u2018spirit of rice\u2019, and the locals also use it for decoration and other purposes.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/841_0-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">\u201cAgaric fungus\u201d is one of the edible varieties of mushrooms found in the forest.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AprilNF_1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Aside from ethnobotany, the WRG also organises awareness-raising events with participants, including students, community leaders, and the Kawthoolei Forestry Department members. The WRG shares information about the ethnobotany survey and insights about local plant species with the community.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9337\" src=\"https:\/\/www.women4biodiversity.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/AprilNF_2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">As a result of their hard work, other community forest leaders have extended invitations to the Women Research Group to conduct research in their community forests.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">This is a big win for women working in biodiversity conservation!<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>ABOUT KAREN ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL ACTION NETWORK<\/strong> (<strong>KESAN) <\/strong><br \/><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kesan.asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KESAN<\/a><\/strong> is a restoration site partner of Women4Biodiveristy in Myanmar. Their focus area is 5, 911 hectares (strong coverage with some degraded areas) of the Kheshorter Community Forest, located west of Lu Thaw Township, Mutraw (Papun) District and east of Mon Township of Klerlweehtoo (Nyaunglaybin) District of Kawthoolei in Myanmar. The forest is under the collective governance, protection and management of fifteen (15) indigenous Karen communities living in three village tracts: Kay Pu, Ler Mu Plaw, and Saw Mu Plaw of Mutraw District.
