Restore HER Rights: Global Insights and Case Studies 2024

Building Resilience and Weaving Gender-Responsive Approaches to Biodiversity Governance

While the role of women in forest restoration is increasingly recognised, their vital contributions to restoring other ecosystems—such as wetlands, mountains, and coastal marine biodiversity—remain underrepresented. Despite provisions in many multilateral environmental agreements aimed at mainstreaming gender, gaps persist in awareness, accessibility, and support for women leading conservation efforts on the ground.

This project, spearheaded by Women4Biodiversity and implemented around late 2021, has sought to close these gaps by strengthening gender-responsive ecosystem restoration practices across varied ecosystems. Through research and documentation of women-led restoration efforts in restoration sites across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the project has tried to integrate these approaches into national policies and international commitments. This three-year initiative was supported by SwedBio through the Stockholm Resilience Center at Stockholm University.
