The Artist II
Celine Murillo – PHILIPPINES
Finalist
A renowned artist of the Talaandig, Salima Saway, is most known for her soil paintings. Using the different types of soil gathered around her home Mt. Kitanglad in Bukidnon, she depicts her people’s belief systems, traditions, and deep connection with Nature.
Her paintings are vivid with imagery from “kalasangan” (the forest), to the “Kalumbata” (Philippine Eagle). The Kalumbata is featured regularly in her art, as the creature symbolizes the sacred balance that makes up life according to Talaandig legends.
“These traditions and rituals make up our identities and must be preserved,” she shares.
