Target 2: Restore 30% of all Degraded Ecosystems

๐ŸŒฟ ๐ƒ๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐š๐๐ž๐ ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐ฌ: Degradation refers to a persistent (long-term) reduction in the capacity to provide ecosystem services. Degraded land includes natural ecosystems which have included a loss of ecosystem functions and services and transformed ecosystems (such as agricultural areas). An assessment of degraded areas within a country is a necessary first step for monitoring the total percentage of degraded ecosystems which are under restoration

๐ŸŒฟ ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง: Restoration refers to actively managing the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged or destroyed.

๐ŸŒฟ ๐„๐ง๐ก๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐›๐ข๐จ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ง๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž๐ฌ: While restoration activities can be undertaken for various reasons, this target specifies that such activities should be undertaken for enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services, ecological integrity and connectivity. These different objectives should be considered in designing and implementing actions to reach this target.

๐ŸŒฟ ๐„๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ง๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ: An area with high ecological integrity has a composition, structure, function and ecological processes close to that of a natural ecosystem. Connectivity ensures the maintenance of natural speciesโ€™ habitats and both objectives should be considered seriously in the design of restoration activities.
