Women are key to successful ecosystem restoration, bringing traditional knowledge, sustainable practices, and strong community leadership. Their contributions enhance biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable resource management. Yet, socio-cultural norms and institutional barriers often limit their participation, decision-making power, and access to resources.
Global frameworks stress the need for gender-responsive restoration. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration calls for inclusive action, while the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) especially Target 2 and Target 23, and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) highlight women’s leadership and equitable benefit-sharing. The 2024 Women4Biodiversity Report reinforces that gender-inclusive approaches lead to more resilient and socially just outcomes.
The Restore HER Rights Webinar Series will spotlight women-led and gender-inclusive restoration efforts worldwide. Through expert dialogue, it aims to strengthen evidence, inspire inclusive policies, and drive action that recognises and supports women’s vital roles in restoration.
This webinar series on women’s role in ecosystem restoration aims to:
- Showcase Women’s Leadership – Highlight women-led and gender-inclusive restoration efforts, emphasising their contributions to biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management.
- Address Gender Barriers – Discuss challenges such as limited land rights, resource access, and decision-making power, and explore solutions for greater inclusion.
- Examine Policy Frameworks – Analyze global commitments, including the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, KM-GBF, and UNCCD, to understand their role in advancing gender-responsive restoration.
- Strengthen Gender-Responsive Approaches – Provide insights on integrating gender perspectives into restoration policies, programs, and decision-making.
- Foster Community of Practice– Connect practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders to strengthen partnerships and advocate for gender-equitable restoration policies and programs.
